Are you guys excited for the holidays? I’m not quite there yet. Being in the heat for the holidays after 6 years of cool or cold weather for Thanksgiving and Christmas is really throwing off my holiday vibe. Plus, and I know I’m not alone in this, I hate that Christmas has become so commercialized. November 1st and it’s Christmas crap everywhere – music, trees, lights, ornaments. I mean, come on. Give Thanksgiving a chance!
Anyway! Last year I came up with my own version of Pumpkin Pie Spice to suit my tastes. Maybe you guys will like it too. Grab an old spice jar and toss these ingredients into it for your own homemade pumpkin pie spice. You can even use this in your coffee or tea if you feel so inclined.
Ingredients Yield: ~4 tbsp
- 2 tbsp Cinnamon
- 3 scant tsp ground ginger
- 1 tsp allspice
- 1 tsp ground cloves
- 1 tsp nutmeg
- 1 tsp ground cardamom
If your container is on the smaller side, you could put the ingredients into a bowl and toss with a fork to combine. Or just put them all into your spice jar, replace lid, and shake until combined.
Use anywhere you see pumpkin pie spice listed on a recipe! What makes this different from the store bought stuff is the added cloves and cardamom and the lack of anti-caking agents/sulfiting agents which prevent spoilage or discoloration. If you are concerned about yours caking (in a humid climate) or it going bad before you use it all, cut the recipe in half. If you are planning to bake 1 pie and 1 loaf of bread that both call for pumpkin pie spice you will quickly use up the halved amount.
