Hi everyone! Yeast infections are the pits, right?? Some of us ladies are just more prone to them than others and I’ve had more than a few. I wanted to share with you how I handle them. Of course, frequent yeast infections might be a sign of pregnancy or something more severe, so you might want to contact your health care professional if you have been getting them more than normal lately.
It might also be your gut that’s to blame! Check out my post How I’m Healing My Gut Part One for a bit more info on my history around gut health and vaginal health and how I believe they are linked. (HERE is How I’m Healing my Gut Part 2!)
The key to this method of healing is early detection. As SOON as you feel the symptoms coming on, follow the steps I’ve outlined below. If the infection has progressed to the stage where you are already having discharge and extreme itching and burning, you will most likely have to add additional methods of healing like a vaginal suppository or the oral fluconazole.
5 Ways I Heal Vaginal Yeast Infections Naturally
1 – Immediately cut out animal milk/milk products & sugar. I don’t generally drink milk or eat cereal, but I definitely avoid them when I have a yeast infection. This includes yogurt. You may have heard in the past that yeast infections can be healed with probiotics, which is true, BUT there is SO MUCH sugar in yogurt that it’s counterproductive. If you did want to have yogurt I’d suggest the unsweetened, organic kind. But, for me personally, even that type of yogurt seems to exacerbate my symptoms. I think it’s the cow’s milk. But take a look at how much sugar is in your favorite yogurt or even plain milk, you may be surprised! And this should go without saying, but ANY type of dessert is off the table!
2 – Cut out other foods that turn to glucose in your bloodstream. These would be any foods made of white flour (ie: bread). For me, pasta especially seems to be quite irritating not only to yeast infections but also to my gut. White rice does seem OK in moderation for me.
3 – Change out of exercise clothes immediately! I suggest bringing a change of clothes with you to the gym and changing right away.
4 – Apple Cider Vinegar Water! This is my go-to healer! 3 times/day I drink 1 tbsp of Bragg’s ACV in 16oz of water. If you have any stomach problems at all, please ask your doctor before attempting this. Make sure you are drinking the full 16oz of water with the ACV and it shouldn’t be too strong. I have been drinking ACV water for awhile and you do get used to the taste. I’ve tried doing 1 tsp 3x/day and it just wasn’t strong enough, but the 1 tbsp/3x a day does the trick. Being properly hydrated is the other key part to this equation. Without enough clean water, your body just cannot do what it needs to do to heal. (Please note: high amounts of acidic foods and drinks can be detrimental to gum/tooth health. I do NOT drink this much ACV on a daily basis.)
5 – Take a quality probiotic. I recommend UDO’s Choice. I take the Super 8 Hi-Potency kind. It not only helps regulate digestion, but helps bring beneficial bacteria to the gut, and again, as you can read about in my post about Healing the Gut, much of our immune system is located in the gut. A quality, refrigerated, probiotic does not compare to the dead stuff you buy off the shelves at Target/Walmart/Walgreens. Quality probiotics should not only be sold and stored in the refrigerator, but also list the very specific types of probiotic strains on the label with numbers and letters.
Even though vinegar is acidic outside of your body, it helps bring your body into an alkaline state so it can heal itself. Basically all you are doing is creating an optimum environment for healing to take place. I’ve read multiple articles linking an acidic body to many diseases, the largest being cancer. The other thing to consider is that many of the foods we eat create an acidic environment inside the body. Examples include coffee, sugar, milk, cheese, and soda, just to name a few. Check out this website for many examples of alkaline foods vs acidic foods. When your body is in an acidic state it creates an environment for candida and other nasties to flourish.
Do I have to buy Bragg’s specifically?
I admit it, I am a big supporter of Bragg. Not only is it Organic and Non-GMO, but their ACV is raw, unfiltered, and every bottle contains “the Mother”. The “Mother” are strands of enzymes, proteins, and beneficial bacteria. I’ve had some bottles of ACV with more “mother” than others and I’ve also had the mother strands increase over time if the bottles sits for longer than normal. All of this is fine! That weird cobweb-looking stuff is the GOOD STUFF! Check out the pic, it’s not a dirty glass, but the strands of mother.
If you are interested in reading more about Bragg’s ACV, go here. I buy mine by the quart at my local supplement store where I also get my probiotic.
Lastly, I wanted to show you what I use for relief. Don’t walk around all day feeling like you want to take a bottle brush to your crotch! Use AZO Yeast! It’s a homeopathic medicine for symptom relief only – it will not cure the infection. These babies are a GODSEND.
And that’s it! Let me know if you have any questions! I’d be happy to help!
